Our Boat

Our boat is a Nautitech 44 Open – She is 44′ long with an open cockpit layout. Launched in October 2021, it is Nautitech’s latest design and incorporates some novel features and a whole list of incremental improvements.

We named our boat Jajabor- which in some eastern Indian languages means Nomad/Wanderer/Gypsy. Swagata’s family is from Bengal, India and I grew up there as well so we thought a Bengali name would be most appropriate and truly represent our common cultural heritage.

Designing any boat involves trade-offs between living space, sailing performance and price. As with all such trade-offs usually you must compromise on something. On one end there are boats made primarily for the charter market (short term vacation rentals), that have wider hulls with large comfortable living spaces inside. They are great to live in, but due to their shape and weight, are generally speaking, slower while sailing. On the other end of the spectrum, you have custom (or semi-custom) built narrow hulled boats streamlined for speed, but somewhat bare bones in terms of living space and amenities. They typically use high-tech materials in their construction to reduce weight and increase strength in order to optimize performance and as a result are much more expensive.

We chose the Nautitech as we found that it offered the right mix of performance and space at a price we could afford (and I use that term loosely). Designed for blue water sailors rather than the charter market, a Nautitech 44 Open sails fast and the living spaces are laid out well and adequate enough for our needs. It has three cabins with plenty of natural lighting and a couple spacious shower rooms. The saloon houses a decent sized galley and a forward facing navigation station. And the outdoor open cockpit allows at least 8 people to sit/lounge comfortably and enjoy the sailing experience.

And now that she is our home, Jajabor is of course the most beautiful and the fastest boat!
